Holmstrom Officially Retires

Tomas Holmstrom made his retirement official Tuesday after 15 seasons with the Red Wings, announcing it at a news conference before the team's home opener against the Stars.

Holmstrom, 40, helped Detroit to four Stanley Cup titles with his hard-nosed play in front of the net. He also won an Olympic gold medal in 2006 with Sweden.

Last season, he had 11 goals and 13 assists in 74 games.

Zetterberg To Replace Lidstrom As Wings' Captain

For only the second time since 1986, the Red Wings will have a new captain, when the NHL returns to action later this month.

An NHL source confirmed with ESPN that forward Henrik Zetterberg is expected to be named the next captain of the club, replacing the retired Nicklas Lidstrom.
